In the early days of the GCC project, no source control system was
used at all.
Correct.
CVS was not used before the egcs project started, though RCS was.
Correct, but a bit misleading. I think the change from RCS to CVS
occurred at about the same time as the egcs fork, but there was a
period of a few years where the official GCC used CVS.
