Neither binutils 2.12 nor 2.12.1 actually work on OpenBSD i386.
This is a looong story, this list's archive (and other lists) will
give you more details than you wish for.

I haven't had time to fix gcc 3.1 yet.  It's very likely this is not that
hard. It's not the first time the assembler that gcc produces is not exactly
portable...
