I'm afraid any C++ code will have to be recompiled, because no two
major versions of GCC are C++ binary compatible.  This is hopefully
not going to be the case of GCC 3.1 and up (perhaps 3.0 already, I'm
not sure).

Suppose so.  But you might still be able to use the 3.0.2 bits with
gcc -V 3.0.2.  It *might* work (but it's known that -V 2.95.3 wouldn't
have worked with 3.0.2's gcc).
