Like Jeff says, sysadmin is supposed to make the backups. At least,
that's my understanding -- I'm pretty far, physically and socially,
from the Sunnyvale sysadmins who would be doing this :-(.

But, Jeff, are they actually responsible for restoring from backups?
(I honestly don't know.)

This is one area we've collectively been weak when maintaining this
box. It's embarassing to say the least, and I know I've hid my head
in the sand more deeply than the other admins on this issue.

So what about the future? I don't know where the co-lo plans stand.
I'm also still basically ignorant about backups. However, I'm working
on an estimate to present to management so we can get some actual
investment for this box, mostly in the form of programmer time to
increase admin automation and to further empower project admins.
Unfortunately I don't make this decision, I can only try to influence
it.

Tom
