It dawns on me I didn't actually answer your question.
I think that the present situation is confusing, and that making -A-
only affect assertions is an excellent idea. I'm not sure we really
need a -U-, isn't that what -undef is for? However, before we change
anything, I want to know why it was that way in the first place, and I
definitely think it should be left alone for 3.0.
