I know it can be unsightly to reply to yourself. However, I've now run
the above commandline by-hand. Same problem. Changeing s/Os/O2/ produces
gcov.o without error/warning...

The above command-line modified to add -save-temps produces rather large
temp files (still with -Os (ie still Seg faulting)):
ls -l gcov*
-rw-r--r--    1 gbsadler src        206444 May 25 13:50 gcov.i
-rw-r--r--    1 gbsadler src         16780 May 25 13:47 gcov.o
-rw-r--r--    1 gbsadler src         25781 May 25 13:50 gcov.s

Would there be interest in gzip/bzip2'ing these and posting them? I
could forward them to this list/gnats or arrange to put them up on www.
