libstdc++ question

I'm using the gcc3 branch on x86 Linux (RH 6.2)
Whenever I link against libstdc++ I see this:

    creche. gcj -Dawt.toolkit=gnu.awt.xlib.XToolkit --main=a -o a a.java -Wl,-rpath,/x1/gcc3/install/lib -lgcj -lgcjx -lstdc++
    /x1/gcc3/install/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/3.0/../../../libstdc++.so: undefined reference to `std::strchr(char const*, int)'

(This example is a Java program but the same thing happens with "hello
world" in C++.)

What gives?

Tom
