What is your stage1 compiler?
For me, the bootstrap fails similarly at 'make compare' if the stage1
compiler is gcc 'version 3.1 20010326 (experimental)'.
There is no problem when the stage1 compiler is 'version 2.95.2
19991024 (release)'.
