I don't think so.  SUS2 says:

        It is not possible to use echo portably across all systems that
        are not XSI-conformant unless both -n (as the first argument) and
        escape sequences are omitted.
        [...]
        New applications are encouraged to use printf instead of echo.

XSI-conformat echo both recognizes no options and always interprets
escape sequences.
