No. See DR#001 -- function return is different from straight
assignment. Joseph Myers posted a pointer to the text in one
of the threads concerning this testcase.
This is a heavy modification of a Plum Hall test, btw. Their
test would only fail under certain conditions (typically some
form of tiny embedded processor), mine fails just about everywhere
we do the wrong thing.
