I'd rather just add an #undef to the appropiate header file.  But it's
up to you.

Nope.  In fact, it was just reported in a Red Hat-internal mailing
list that the current CVS autoconf won't work correctly with GCC's
top-level configure :-(

So, we must definitely not require it right now :-)
