Questions about using gcc 2.8.1 on Irix 6.4

I've got all necessary header files and libs installed(like the Irix 
as..etc) and using gcc 2.8.1.
And I'm trying to compile OpenGL programs.
1) I don't know where to override the CFLAGS define. And where the best 
place to "globally" declare cc -> gcc?
2) What would be a good basic set of compile switches of gcc in the Irix 
6.4 environment?
3) It complaining about -mabi=32 support does not work yet... Am I missing 
something in the installation? Or can the error go away w/ the correct set 
of compile swicthes?
4) I'm not using gnu make? Is that a problem? I'm using the SGI make and 
assembler(as).

Any and all information would be appreciated. I've looked at numerous 
websites that talk about gcc on Irix but haven't been able to find answer 
to these problems w/ my particular configuration.
