egcs vs. gcc

I have read the fax on the relationship of egcs to gcc. But I am still
a bit confused about the naming of distributions: What is the
difference between distributions named with egcs and those named with
gcc? e.g. Is gcc-2.95.2 just a newer version of egcs-2.91.66?
