Yep - that was my guess too - therefore I was willing to go to great
lengths debugging this ... I wanted to have a real example where this
hurt someone to convince myself of the extent of the problem.

Unfortunately, the real cause was much more mundane ;-)

Besides, I was beaten by Stephen Moshier while still trying to wrap my
head around the code in question (i.e. the *.c files, while the problem
was in crt.h ...)

I think I'll stick to g77 bug reports from now on :-(
