Through elm's vi editor doing :r !gcc -v gives the above while
on my xterm I get
mybox> gcc -v
Reading specs from /usr/local/egcs-1.1.2/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnulibc1/egcs-2.91.66/specs
gcc version egcs-2.91.66 19990314 (egcs-1.1.2 release)

Sorry for the mistake. I guess my PATH doesn't get exported for
xterm -e elm
Nevertheless, my problem still persists.
