It's using ELF. There is no problem at all since the binutils
support many formats and translation between them. You can still
convert your elf binary into S-records or Intel records with objcopy.
(the opposite is not true...). You may add your own format if you want.

The advantage of ELF is that it's standard and we can benefit from
DWARF-2 debugging info.
