Why is wstring commented out in libstdc++ 2.8?

I am just getting started using STL on Linux
(RH 5.2 with libstdc++ 2.8.0). I want to use
wstring from STL but see that it and apparently
all wchar_t support in STL is commented out. What
is up here? Do I need to update to a later egcs?
If so what must I update (i.e. what is the set
of egcs packages that must all be updated together
for C++ and C development)?

Thanks,
Baron
