make distclean

For the life of me, I cannot understand why 'distclean', as the target of
any makefile, should ever try to create any executables.

My last 'cvs up' was an hour or so ago, and 'make distclean' crashes:

configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot create executables.
make[1]: *** [config.status] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/s/tools/egcsobj/i586-pc-sco3.2v5.0/libf2c'
make: *** [do-distclean] Error 1
