Yup. The testsuite's handling of PIC options needs major improvement
On my todo list is to look at Robert Lipe's patch which does improve
some of this kind of stuff.
It wasn't a major problem -- once enough of the Sunnyvale net was
back to normal it was easy enough to run a make check there and
see why things were failing.
