gas problem

This is not EGCS problem, but it start happening, someone in this list
may have similiar exprience.
Recently, I'm experiencing problem with gas on i386-pc-bsdi3.1 which
prevent me to bootstrap recent snapshot.
I have following problem during bootstrap. I tested this with 980608
snapshot to make sure.

# [GARBAGES] means garbage characters which is not suitable for mail :-<
I generated unroll.s, and checked source -- no garbage on line.
Then, assembling it with binutils-2.9 based gas shows same
problem. Assemble same file with BSDI stock 'as' (which is gas 1.38)
don't cause above error.
I tried this on three different mahcine, same result. So I guess gas
is wrong.
Any idea?
