gcc optimisation testing


i was wondering how the optimisation option of gcc works
i tried -finline-functions, -funroll-loops, -ftree-pre and the likes; but
nothing worked for me
please help me write or provide some code example.
gcc = 4.1.2
os = redhat rhel5
