My commentary:

I set CC to /usr/bin/gcc

I set installation to happen into /home/ns/Programs with the intension of
compiling programs in my home directory so as not to interfere with the
SUSE 10.2alpha2 system, which is changing fairly rapidly. As SUSE had
compiled gcc, it lacked FORTRAN, necessary for some programs I'd like to
work with...
