Let egcs-bugs know what you find out.  Subsequent test-suite results posted
here from i486 didn't show any differences.  I'm about to do my own
local spin of the 19990418 snapshot.  I did check in a fix to Toon's
reported bug, but that bug wasn't the kind that lots of code would
run into, or that'd result in memory scribbling.

(BTW, you did mean overwriting of *compiler* memory, not *program*
memory, right?)
