recent tester insanity...

I believe the recent tester insanity was caused by the loss of its
lockfile, causing two builds to run at once, in the same directory.
You can imagine this might not work too well.
I think the original problem was due to all the swap space on the
machine being chewed up by another process, but can't be sure.
