According to Paul Eggert, `expr' is totally insensitive to backslashes
and this kind of junk, while `echo' isn't.  Unfortunately, given these
limits, We'll have to revert to echo and just hope we don't get
backslashes in pathnames.

Thanks for the investigation, I'll post a patch to fix this
momentarily.
