    Regarding your report: I think it would be valuable to
    know how much physical memory your machine has (and how
    much of that was used by other processes at the time of
    the failure, although this is admittedly hard to determine
    afterwards.
    
    Also, did you set a limit to the virtual memory available
    on this shell, using ulimit?
