I had severe problems building gcc-3.2 for i586-pc-linux-gnulibc1, in part
due to libc5 (5.4.38) headers, but mostly due to gcc itself.
I am not quite sure if linux-gnulibc1 is still officially supported, but I
sort of need a compiler for such systems and wanted to upgrade to
gcc-3.2.

Try building gcc-3.2 on a linux-gnulibc1 system (if you still have one)

with the fixes I had to apply (both to libc5's string.h and to the gcc-3.2
