when run grows to an immense in-memory size and finally crashes with a segmentation fault. The crash happens after just about a million iterations, or the system crashes after it has filled up the swap file (This typically happens on SuSE systems.)

I suppose that cleanup after the exception is never done completely, and so the stack fills up with junk that is supposed to be cleaned up by the "leave" assembler instruction at the end of the function.
