There was a significant increase in g++ testsuite failures with -mabi=64 between 2.97 20001113 and 2.97 20001119. Failures are still present in current snapshots. The changes are not observed in the default -n32 abi.
This may be a result of the change to the V3 ABI on 18 Nov 2000.
