Tried your code and it does not crash gcc version 30 20010507 (prerelease).
You are using the Red Hat version of gcc. Bugs for this
version of gcc should go to Red Hat: http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla.
Red Hat has updated versions of the compiler you are
using: (gcc-2.96-81 is the latest). You should fetch
that version from Red Hat.
