In Richard's situation, libffi wouldn't configure and build
properly on Solaris/x86. The following patch has been 
checked in:

  http://sourceware.cygnus.com/ml/java-patches/2000-q2/msg00008.html

And the SP problem didn't show up using the latest gcj and
libgcj combination.

 This error is most likely the result of version mismatch between the
 compiler and the runtime (it is a compiler bug that has been fixed).
 Please upgrade to a recent snapshot of the compiler, and verify the
 version with "gcj -v". If you have already done that and the error has
 gone away, or if you don't want to do that, please let us know so that
 we can close the PR.

 Hmm, most likely, though the plateform was a bit different from what
 we usually use (it was Solaris x86.) I have located a suitable host
 and a build was on my TODO list. `emberson@contact.com' (I couldn't
 find your real name in the mail headers) please let us know if the bug
 is still around.
