I apologize for mischaracterizing your proposal.  I am very strongly
opposed to the configure-time approach.  The answer to a disagreement
among maintainers should not be to add a configure option.  That path
leads to an ever-increasing maintenance burden for configure options
which very few people use.

I think Manuel's patch should go in as-is.
