My memory agrees with both of those points, but I also think that Sun never
published the extensions in a timely-enough manner, so that there was
indeed significant reverse-engineering going on and there may well have been
incompatibilities introduced in that process.

I think the resulting mess is such that I would be very hesitant to refer to
*any* stabs documention as "definitive".
