[PATCH] Refactoring for mode-dependent addresses
- From: Mark Shinwell <shinwell at codesourcery dot com>
- To: gcc patches <gcc-patches at gcc dot gnu dot org>

- Subject: [PATCH] Refactoring for mode-dependent addresses
This patch refactors code relating to GO_IF_MODE_DEPENDENT_ADDRESS so that
recog.c always deems PRE_INC, POST_INC, PRE_DEC and POST_DEC cases to
be mode dependent. Previously this decision was deferred to
target-specific code.
This work has arisen from an existing bug in the implementation of
GO_IF_MODE_DEPENDENT_ADDRESS for ARM targets in Thumb mode. With a 4.1
compiler the attached testcase tickles this and incorrect code is
generated (a mem:DI containing an autoincrement is incorrectly narrowed
to a mem:SI during combine). The same failure is not seen on recent
mainlines as it happens: not due to the absence of the bug, but because an
earlier optimization phase refactors the RTL in such a way that combine
behaves differently.
This patch decreases the likelihood of similar slip-ups in the
implementation of GO_IF_MODE_DEPENDENT_ADDRESS and fixes this Thumb bug
as a consequence. I appreciate this affects a lot of targets but this
seems like a good clean-up to make.
This has been bootstrapped and regtested on i686-pc-linux-gnu and
arm-none-linux-gnueabi. OK for mainline once open?
