Sorry for any confusion. I think your patch is great. My comments
were in reply to your "macros vs. scripts" long-term philosophy of
libgcc. They should be thought about in the same mindset as the
move to top-level planning, and not immediately relevant to your
patch (but supportive of your design arguments).
My apologies for confusingly switching between concerns about how
best to fix this soon (for 4.1), and long-term thoughts on what a
redesigned libgcc might look like for gcc 4.4.
