Thanks for the comments on this patch. Here is a revised version for consideration, although I will hold off from officially submitting it until the mainline is re-opened for new features.

Technically, --print-optimizers it is a new feature, but given that this is mostly a support and documentation issue and very localised, I wonder whether it's the case to consider this for GCC 4.2 nevertheless?

Well I do not mind holding off and resubmitting the patch later on. It is part of a bigger patch to implement per-function optimizations, so I was going to have to be submitting more patches anyway.
