Oh!  I looked here:

  http://www.gnu.org/software/gcc/gcc.html

and I see:

  Active development (mainline):  will become GCC 4.2.0 (current changes)
  Stage 1; open for all changes.

However following the links from the Wiki I have now found this page:

  http://gcc.gnu.org/

where it does indeed say that 4.2.0 is in stage 3.

So I am willing to delay my patch until after 4.2 has branched.  Sorry 
about that.
