You (and others) will hate me for following up on this -- but isn't
the whole problem here that intel does _not_ work to make GCC better,
and yet expects contributions from their competitor to work well on
Intel too?

In any case, it's all really quite simple...  Mark already asked
specificall whether the proposed patch _hurts_ Nocona in any way.  If
it does not hurt compared to an unpatched compiler, then it helps
AMD64 and doesn't hurt Nocona, so what's all the fuzz about? If it
does hurt, then the patch would introduce a regression so it can't be
commited.
