Eric, presumably this is the kind of patch the Ada folks had in mind?
Not the kind of patch, *the* patch. :-)
I'll wait for Eric to reply and/or suggest an alternate solution to
this problem, before proposing this change "for real" for mainline.
FWIW fine with me. Nico might have a word to say about it.

Indeed, this is precisely the patch we were looking for.

Here is the additional additional chunk to make it work for Ada characters:
