This change should be considered for GCC-4.1 too.
Other issues are still under investigation.
Tested on an i686-pc-linux-gnu.  Applied to mainline.


Is this a regression?  Please note we are really day to day on
releasing 4.1.0 and in my thoughts we should be more careful at
what we say should go into 4.1.0.
