Hmm, when I try to run the testcase you provided with the patched
compiler I get:

*** glibc detected *** free(): invalid pointer: 0x08049d68 ***
zsh: abort      ./auto

Well at least it's an improvement, the unpatched compiler ICE's. ;-)

Sorry, I'm going to bed now, will look into it tomorrow evening.
