There are other cases where it helps.  For example, my patch
saves 2kb of .text size at -O2 for PR17549, which is almost
10% (unfortunately it wins only a few 100 bytes for -Os).

Sure, whatever.  I'll test it on the platforms I have access
to and get SPEC numbers for ppc, i686 and amd64.  It could be
a few days before I have all the results.
