    I guess this is ok.  But really, is there any need for this kind
    of optimization during expansion anyway?  Why wouldn't this be 
    done in fold, for instance?

The proof that it *isn't* being done in fold is that the fact that this
code being wrong caused a bug.  As to whether it *should* be done in
fold or not ...
