improved support for dead code stripping on darwin

Subject: improved support for dead code stripping on darwin

I've checked in a small patch to ensure that we won't dead code strip certain code... Currently, it is turned off, as it isn't suitable without a newer assembler. I also put this on the apple-ppc-branch, where it is on.
