Sorry -- I must have been unclear.

I think the clear-only-holes approach might be a good medium-term 
solution, but it's certainly too complex for the short term.

Actually, let's just apply your patches now.  If someone comes along 
with better patches, we'll put them in instead -- but it really is time 
to get a release spun.
