Sure, because the patch was never backported to the 3.3 branch. It was only applied to mainline.

A quick test to determine whether libjava is broken is to run the C++
testsuite. If you see hundreds of failures, then libjava is very likely
broken.

FWIW, the problem with my patch was exactly this, it caused no regressions in the C++ testsuite but still broke libgcj.

libgcj might possibly be at fault here... Does your patch have the side-effect of thightening semantic checks on overloaded functions?
