I'd rather not put my patch on the 3.3 branch -- it's a little too
risky, I think!

I don't think that we're going to be going back from GNU make to generic
make, until or unless somebody decides to do the work to put automake
into the GCC directory.

Perhaps, however, we could add something to the 3.3.2 caveats page
mentioning this change in our policy for 3.4?
