Mark indicated elsewhere that as we're furiously fixing bugs in both
3.4 and 3.3, it would be best no to diverge too much so that bugfix
patches apply cleanly to both branches.

These patches should be obviously safe by inspection.  I figured it
might be worthwhile to apply them in 3.3 and keep the branches more in
sync.  Not a big deal, just thought I'd toss the idea out there.
