Only VAR = something
is posix.

On the other hand, even though it's not quite modular,
putting one single definition of VPATH:

VPATH=whatever_you_want:${ADA_VPATH}

ought to work,
assuming you define
ADA_VPATH=@srcdir@/ada
in the ada specific fragment.

or something like that.

(all this being somewhat theoretical, since it ends up not getting used).
