While this is interesting, I don't really think this is the way to go ;-)
In any case, we want to be able to build the *existing* glibc 2.2.5
with gcc 3.1, so we should not require changing the glibc Makefiles ...

For 3.1 it is too late now anyway. So I'd suggest to leave 3.1 as is,
and implement the proper fix when it is ready. If some distributors
need a temporary solution earlier, they can always use extra patches.
